Custom Yacht Club Burgees

A burgee is a club’s flag, flown at the masthead or from the starboard spreader, and it is the one flag on a boat that is purely identity. It is also the one most often ordered in the wrong size.

The convention is roughly half an inch of fly for every foot of the boat’s overall length — so a thirty-foot boat wants a burgee around fifteen inches on the fly. Clubs usually need two or three sizes across their membership rather than one, and we would rather quote three sizes than watch a fleet fly one that looks wrong on half the boats.

Construction is where the money goes: four rows of stitching at the fly, a reinforced corner patch, and a hoist finished as a rope and toggle or a sleeve depending on how members actually rig it. Ask your members before ordering, because a burgee with the wrong hoist gets left in a locker.
